To Cure Burnout, Embrace Seasonality is a book that details how to add variety into daily routine. The book takes the words from Cal Newport's NYT article of the same name.

The book incorporates weight differences as a version of typography as image for call-out quotes and special text. I loved playing with the massively variety of the Univers font.
Killer Pieces serves as a collection poster that details the history of 20th Century Spyware gadgets. I mimicked a fashion magazine layout with red highlights on the images to showcase the spyware.

The history of spyware as fashion accessories is quite interesting. 20th century Cold War era forced intelligence agencies to be creative while still blending in with the trends of the time. My main objective for this poster was clear conceptual messaging and distinct hierarchy with the presented information.
The Art of Carving Legacy highlights the long-history of Chinese seal carving. I am fascinated by Chinese typography as one of the longest lasting and developing writing system in the world. I aimed to dive deep into the history of the seals as a form of signature, ownership, and art.

In this poster I arrange the entires in a chronological order which shows how the seal went from strictly bureaucratic to an intrinsic piece of Chinese painting. The typefaces I chose related to the small-seal script of Chinese type, a font developed specifically for the seal.
Wong Kar Waifinder is a directionally-based app that guides the user through Hong Kong as seen from the lens of the film director Wong Kar Wai. Wong is famous for his unique cinematography and vision for the city and he uses many of Hong Kong's famous sites for his filming. This app seeks to be an immersive experience that not only showcases a location's history but how Wong Kar Wai interprets it in his films.

I also created the branding and color palette for the whole project as well as special drawings that accopmany the pages.

BNIM is an architecture firm based in Kansa City with a focus on sustainability. As their summer Graphic Design Intern, I worked on making a data visualization for their Phoenix Matrix tool. BNIM developed the Phoenix Matrix, a visualization table, as a way to calculate the cost and benefits of different building types.

Working with graphic design and sustainability supervisors, I made two versions of the Phoenix Matrix. One for print and one for web view.

How do you keep up with your long-distance home friends while at college? College students struggle to maintain long-distance friendships amidst busy schedules and newfound priorities, despite current digital communication tools. The issue isn’t that people lack the means to stay connected—it’s that they may not remember to reach out or know what to talk about. This experience is experienced by a majority of new undergrad students who find it hard to maintain long distance friendships and stay involved in each other’s lives.

The Watergate Scandal is one of the most important events of 20th Century America. Not only was it the first American Presidential resignation and the first televised scandal, but also the first time Americans questioned the morality of the White House.

The Means & The Ends contains a speech by Representative Barbara Jordan during the 1974 impeachment trials of President Nixon. The speech is in conversation with the 1972 "Smoking Gun" conversation recorded between President Nixon and his aide HR Halderman. The two talk about covering up the rapidly unfolding Watergate scandal. The two text evolve throughout the book and give the reader an unfolding sense of uncovering and covering up.

Field Research

A location-based app uses geographic data to provide personalized information based on a user's physical location. I look for different variations of stylized location apps that showcases the style and identity of the place.

Map Making

One of the most unique part of Hong Kong architecture to me is the consistent use of pattern mosaic tiles throughout the city.  I love that design and it was one of the first thing I put on my design mood board for the app. I wanted to recreate that design and I thought maybe I could do it as a stylistic map. So I create two of these stylistic maps of Hong Kong on Figma and mapped out each of the shooting locations on the patterns. The first one corresponds with Chunking Express and the second one is Fallen Angels. Honestly this was the most time consuming process but it came out looking exactly how I wanted them to look.

Usability Testing

Here are my main takeaways from my user testing. I conducted my testing in person. At first, I let my user describe their thought process out loud without guidance and I kept track of their first clicks. Then I used A/B testing to see which design iteration my users like best.

1. 50% of the users were confused as to what is clickable/intractable and what isn't

2. 25% of the users were confused on the mechanics of the map and wished there were other ways to navigate the map

Branding

I made these stickers on Illustrator and tailored each one to each page and movie's color identity. For example, Chungking Express is dark blue and yellow while Fallen Angels is green and red. I used these illustrations to separate the movies from each other while still having the same overall page layout.

Introduction

I thought of the introduction of the app to be a dynamic introduction to Wong Kar Wai and the visual language of the brand. I also introduce the flashing button as clickable.

Cinema

To dial between the different movies of Wong Kar Wai, I thought of a way to implement a unique and understandable way. I thought of the old school cinema wheels as a transition.

Motion

I had a unique idea of how I should implement the location element of the different movies. I mimicked Hong Kong's famous tile patterns in the map.

Insight

Key Takeaways

1. I think one of my issues regarding both of my projects is the usability of my navigation system. I have a tendency to try to make my designs unique (ie. map), however it means I end up making systems that isn't really seen in app design.

2. I would definitely rework my directional writing. A lot of my users give me feedback that those texts should be clearer.

Design Decisions
I used my red film sheets as a form of cover and uncover. My thought process was that the red sheets would cover the Nixon red text and then once the reader turn the sheets, they uncover the text. They also uncover the hidden green text that I put in the red images.

The book is with the size of the Watergate tape recorder, the Sony Tape Recorder TC-800B. I’ve never worked with such a dimension and I wanted to try.

Problem Statement:

College students struggle to maintain long-distance friendships because they are uncertain about how to reach out to those friends in meaningful ways and are not regularly informed on their friends’ lives.

Success of Online Interaction

1. Shared Online Activities: Video calls and group chats are successful in keeping friends connected and updated. Sharing photos, voice memos, and jokes helps in maintaining a sense of closeness despite physical distance.

2. Scheduled Updates and Calls: By setting specific times for calls or updates, students ensure regular communication. Interactions with Personal Touches: Responding directly to Instagram stories, for example, adds a personal touch beyond otherwise passive viewing on social media. These approaches help bridge emotional distance, making each interaction more memorable.
Sharing photos, voice memos, and jokes helps in maintaining closeness.

Failure of Online Interaction

1. Frequency of Interactions: College students note that their busy schedules and differing life paths often lead to reduced frequency of interactions. Without any physical or digital reminders to contact long-distance friends, students may lack awareness of their weakening friendships.

2. Lack of Shared Experiences: A common sentiment is the feeling of growing apart due to an absence of shared daily experiences.

3. Unengaged Digital Interactions: The limitations of digital platforms are evident in their inability to sustain meaningful interactions. Group chats often lose activity and interest, and communication that is confined to social media leads to a sense of disconnect.

What is the Phoenix Matrix?

The Phoenix Matrix is a series of calculations of the cost and benefits of constructing four different sustainability building types. The types include Business as Usual (regular building), LEED Platinum, Zero Energy and Water, and Regenerative Building. The climate impact covers the three environmental scopes of architecture.

What are the Scopes?

Scope 1: Direct emissions: Energy Demand, Energy Recharge, and Net Energy
The three units have an additive relationship: Energy Demand + Energy Recharge = Net Energy.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions Energy Grid Demand and Pollution

Scope 3: Water usage and construction emissions

Brainstorm Sketches

Scope 1:

To convey the additive relationship of the three, I use a lightning symbol to correlate the three different statistics. I also use green and orange to convey the negative values (good for climate) and positive values (bad for environment)

Scope 2:

Since the rest of the scopes don’t have a direct relationship within the values, I focused on trying new and innovative ways to create representations of the design

Scope 3:

Water demand has a multitude of individual sections of types of water needed by a building

Brainstorming different ways of showing the relationship of water icons without compromising neatness and visibility

The original Phoenix Matrix is set up as a graph so my first iteration of the design reflected the graph-like nature of the matrix. With my own designed icons and representing positive and negative values using the BNIM color palette, I created a to-scale graph of the matrix. I developed new personalized icons for each of the data points.

Another Solution

Aside from creating the Phoenix Matrix visual, I was also helping BNIM with launching their new website. Therefore, I thought the Phoenix Matrix could use a web solution that aligns with the company's technological forward thinking.

Web Prototype

Elevating Data Presentation

I prototyped the web version of the Phoenix Matrix in the last week of my internship. I believed that the interaction of the page helps highlight the data in a way the grid format can't. By breaking out of the strict grid of the print version, the web version presents the data in a much more dynamic way.

INSIGHTS

Key Takeaways

My supervisors and I are satisfied with the second version due to the flexibility and interactiveness of the design. The intense idealization process laid the groundwork for the designs. It was hard, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.

Challenges

The greatest challenge I face was accessibility. The Director of Sustainability at BNIM was one of my supervisors as well. He is one of the writers of the original Phoenix Matrix and he is red-green color blind. This is the first time I’m learning to accommodate and receiving feedback from a color-blind user in real time. It instilled in me a design habit to think about accessibility while iterating.

It offers quick, engaging activity prompts to keep pals connected via photos, texts, and voice messages. Suitable for one-on-one or friend group (pod) interactions, My Pod adapts to different friendship dynamics. It also features real-time mood statuses for glimpses into how friends are feeling, sparking meaningful conversations.

I looked for imagery that can represent both the industrial and the organic.  I manipulated the colors of Gienna Gordon's scanned sketch images and overlapped their composition to invoke corporate paperwork. In order to convey the message of finding personal seasonal schedule in the workforce, I took advantaged of the versatile font Univers. Its usage in corporate logos led me to choose it as my body text. Then I used its large collection of styles to create an undulating style for important quotes.

The climate impact covers the three environmental scopes of architecture and the financial impact deals with the short term costs and long term incentives and benefits.

While the financial part of the matrix is fully realized in Excel sheets, BNIM wants an easy visual of the climate impact to present to clients and investors.

Scope one refers to the direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Some examples are emissions from company vehicles or on-site energy generation. Scope one has three different units: Energy Demand, Energy Recharge, and Net Energy.

I looked for imagery that can represent both the industrial and the organic.  I manipulated the colors of Gienna Gordon's scanned sketch images and overlapped their composition to invoke corporate paperwork. In order to convey the message of finding personal seasonal schedule in the workforce, I took advantaged of the versatile font Univers. Its usage in corporate logos led me to choose it as my body text. Then I used its large collection of styles to create an undulating style for important quotes.

The original Phoenix Matrix is set up as a graph so my first iteration of the design reflected the graph-like nature of the matrix. With my own designed icons and representing positive and negative values using the BNIM color palette, I created a to-scale graph of the matrix.

While the graph form is usable and reflects the structure of the original graph style matrix, it is very structured and hard to move around. In addition, the structure of the rigid graph isn't the most visually interesting either.

Therefore, I spent some more time brainstorming another idea that represents the matrix in a more visually dynamic way.

I dropped the orange color with the new version. Here, I used four different variations of green. One of my supervisors, the director of sustainability, is red green color blind. I checked the green colors to make sure they are distinguishable from each other along with the gray tones.

My supervisors and I are much satisfied with the second version due to the flexibility and interactiveness of the design. During the design project, most of my time was spent idealizing, erasing, and idealizing again. The idealization, however, laid the groundwork for the designs. It was hard, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.
