Typography, Image manipulation, Composition

I am currently working a paid position as the Student Marketing and Graphic Design Assistant for the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum here in Washington University in St. Louis. I work with the marketing team to have distinct design versions for different museum programs. I have the museum's event posters I designed. I worked strictly within the museum's art direction. These are turned into physical flyers and horizontal digital advertisements.
I created three spreads that translate the EPA's data regarding bird migration and its relationship to climate change. I made unique data visualization that showcases the datapoints from the EPA and wrote all the copywriting. The layout and set up of the spreads is meant to fit the magazine Missouri Conservationist.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) is a generationally beloved game with farming, fishing and decorating an aesthetic twist. I aim to highlight the game's food items

View Prototype

A series of three eight-page booklets that unfold into posters. Based on the 2017 article "The Lazy River" by Zadie Smith. My series focuses on points of narrative break: moments of clarity within the hazy vacation.

The Problem

The assignment was to create an archival website that highlights items. For this restaurant website, I'm thinking about what is the best way to showcase the game items without overshadowing it

The Solution

I created an archival website while stimulating a real life restaurant experience. I also figured out how to make an engaging menu without resorting to listing every item out.

Research

Field Research

I looked at restaurant inspirations and focused on how they presented their menus. I really like grid background that shows the hierarchy of the website. I also looked for a restaurant that displays their menu alongside a photo, which is an important element I wanted to emphasize in my website

Low Fidelity Designs

I iterated the display of food items and how to best display all the restaurants with a representative food

User Feedback

Pros:
Users enjoyed the use of a playful font like Barriecito
Also enjoyed similar fun design choices like the torn paper and filled in icons

Cons:
The vertical navigation icons was too prominent and took away from the images
The fonts should be consistent
Overusing fun elements in certain pages

Image Treatment

My main focus with the writing was taking moments of nebulous vacation bliss and contrast it with moments of narrative clarity. I took the dreamy landscapes of American painters Richard Mayhew and manipulated with grain and blur to fit the theme of hazy vs clear understanding.

Takeaways

1. My idea for the vertical menu bar was less intuitive until I adjusted the size
2. The artistic components of the website must help highlight the images
3. Sticking to grid system is key to the images look stable instead of floating
4. I would like to make the hover states in the menu pages more fluid
